Research & Development

Swedish National Heritage Board leads the work of the cultural heritage sector in strengthening the knowledge about the content and change of the cultural environment by means of research.

The research and development, conducted or financed by the Swedish National Heritage Board, are directed by the responsibility to preserve and present the cultural heritage and historic sites. An important part is to make the knowledge accessible and that the results should strengthen the scientific foundation, both methodological and theoretical, for the daily management of the cultural heritage.

The projects are often interdisciplinary, run in collaboration between scholars from different scientific fields. The research and development supported by the Swedish National Heritage Board may be carried out by both external research institutions - primarily universities and university-colleges - and by the Board itself. External scholars usually undertake research tasks, while projects of a developmental character are handled directly by the Board.

A Council for Research and Development (FoU-rådet) has been established, consisting of a group of distinguished scholars from different disciplines and representatives for the county administration and museums, as a guarantee for the quality of the research financed by the Swedish National Heritage Board.
