Stone circles from the Bronze Age, medieval manors, castles and burial sites - Sweden has a wealth of places to visit with cultural-historical significance. Discover traces from the past and get inspired to learn more about our cultural heritage.

Trönö Church-tower  in wood

1. Trönö gamla kyrka

Northern Sweden's best-preserved church site from the Middle Ages. The church, with its wooden-roofed churchyard wall and free-standing bell tower, is a cohesive vintage church environment well worth a visit.

Ottarshögen

2. Ottar's Mound

Ottar's Mound - named after Ottar Vendelkråka - king of Svea - is one of Sweden's largest burial mounds. It is part of a burial ground with over 60 graves from the Migration Period (375-550 AD).

3. Gamla Uppsala

The Swedes' kings resided here, in the outskirts of Uppsala. Gamla Uppsala museum with its exhibition hall is adjacent to the majestic Kings' Mounds. Open year arround.

Birka - the Viking town

4. Birka - The Viking Town

Remains of a Viking Age community on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren. There is a museum on the island, as well as excavations every summer.

Mälsåker - Manor house

5. Mälsåker Manor House

One of Sweden's finest baroque houses. The roof and the upper floors was devoured by fire in 1945. The house has regained its former glory after extensive restoration work.

Ekornavallen

6. Ekornavallen

Ekornavallen is one of the most remarkable ancient sites in Västergötland, with graves from Sweden's entire prehistoric period: Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, bearing witness to the great importance of the area for thousands of years.

Alvastra Monestary

7. Alvastra Monastery

Ruins from a monastery founded in the year 1143. French master-builders supervised the construction and it came to influence building techniques throughout the county of Östergötland.

The Rök stone

8. The Rök Stone

One of Sweden's most famous rune stones. Around 750 runes swerve across its surface. Adjacent to the stone is an outdoor museum.

Dädesjö old church

9. Dädesjö Old Church

The church with its 13th-century murals and ceiling paintings have been both demolished and used as tool and grain storehouse. Today you can visit the internationally renowned church in the heart of Småland all year round.

Ismantorp Fortress

10. Ismantorp Fortress

Mystifying ancient fortress on the island of Öland. Some argue the castle was simply a military stronghold, while others maintain it was both a sanctuary and a fortification.

The Lugnaro Mound

11. The Lugnaro Mound

Bronze Age grave in the county of Halland. A ritual ship-shaped arrangement of stones unearthed within the hill tells us how our ancestors viewed the dividing line between life and death.

The Kings grave in Kivik

12. The Kivik Grave

Sweden's largest circular grave. Inside the 3,000 year-old burial site, there is a grave made up of flat rocks with inscriptions that have puzzled scientists since the 18th century.

Ales stenar - Shipformation in standing stones

13. Ales stenar

The biggest shipsetting in Sweden. We do not know for certain what the funcion of the stones were and what they symbolised when the setting was created around 1400 years ago.

Glimmingehus - the fortified manor

14. Glimmingehus - The Medieval Manor

The best kept medieval fortified manor in Scandinavia. It was built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
