Administration

Birka and Hovgården is state own property and managed by the the Swedish National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet). An administrative council with representatives from the local authorities at Ekerö, the Stockholm County Administrative Board, and the Swedish National Heritage Board supervise and support the development of World Heritage activities. The guiding principles for this work are stipulated in an administrative plan that is set jointly by these public authorities.

Public activities

As of 1 April 2008, Strömma Turism & Sjöfart is responsible for operations at Birka that are open to the public.

Information about the opening hours in the guest harbour, the restaurant and Birka Museum, as well as schedules for boat rides, guided tours, and other programmes can be found on Strömma's web site.
