Ottar's Mound

At 37 metres in diameter, the burial mound of Ottar is by far one of the largest of its kind in Sweden. It is part of a burial ground with over 60 graves which was established during the Migration Period in Sweden (AD 375-550) and in use for several hundred years. The site is not only of importance for archaeological research, but also plays a key part in discussions on the birthplace of the kingdom of Svea, modern day Sweden.

The ancient remains and prehistoric site are named after the king of Svea Ottar Vendelskråka who is mentioned in old documents going back to the 8th century. These tell of Ottar king of Svea being laid to rest in Vendel. Ottar's mound has direct links to the royal mounds of Gamla Uppsala where it is said his grandfather Aun, father Egil and son Adils were buried.

Man and woman

In the early 20th century an archaeological survey of the mound, plus a dozen other graves at the site, was carried out to see whether or not it contained Ottar the famed king of Svea. The grave was shown to contain both a man and a women buried in the early 6th century. Also found were belongings worthy of a king.

Opening hours

Ottar's mound suits visits in all seasons. One of the great summertime enjoyments is to sit on the top with coffee and cake, and to look out across delightful lake Vendel.

Travel directions

Ottar's mound is situated in Uppland. Around 24 kilometres north of Uppsala is Läby where you turn off road E4, and go towards Örbyhus or Vendel. After seven kilometres you go through the burial ground which is on both sides of the road. Turn and park by the community centre.
